ARCHERIF’s field survey of racism in Higher Education Institutions in France

Aim of the survey
The ARCHERIF survey aims to study the dynamics of racism within Higher Education and Research Institutions (HERIs) in France. It is part of a global approach to raise awareness and build solutions for a more inclusive and equitable academic environment. This survey comprises a quantitative phase consisting of an online questionnaire which, at the end, allows participants to leave their contact details (these being dissociated from their answers to guarantee pseudonymisation). Participants who leave their contact details will be invited to take part in a qualitative phase consisting of a structured interview lasting around 60 minutes.

Survey distribution
HERIs who agree to take part in this survey will receive a unique link to distribute to their university community. This link will provide access to the online questionnaire.
Although the questionnaire is identical for all participants, it adapts dynamically according to the answers received. For example, if a respondent indicates having been confronted with situations of racism, additional sections will open up to explore these themes in greater depth. This conditional process guarantees a questionnaire that meets the profile of each participant. The estimated time to complete the questionnaire is between 5 and 8 minutes.

Why take part?
By highlighting the forms and mechanisms of ethno-racial discrimination in the university environment, the ARCHERIF results will equip HERIs that wish to combat racism more effectively, by providing them with more in-depth results from their survey site but also at the national level, by illuminating the path for more effective policies and actions for a more equitable and inclusive higher education and research.
